Residential Solar Installation in Santa Fe

With over 300 days of sun per year, it's no wonder that Santa Fe is becoming a solar mecca right before our eyes.

Some of our most beloved major institutions are leading the way by making the switch to renewable energy. On Earth Day in 2023, St. John's College revealed that they made the switch to 100% solar power which will save them over $100,000 annually! Not to mention, The Santa Fe Opera completed a large solar installation producing over 400kWh per year which will reduce the Opera's carbon emissions by 13 million pounds and save over $1.3 million in electricity costs over the system's lifetime.

It's obvious that solar power is on the rise in the City Different. More and more Santa Fe homeowners are making the switch to harness the sun's abundant energy. If you're considering installing a solar system for your home, read on for Santa Fe homeowners' FAQ's about switching to clean energy.

How Residential Solar Works

Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic (PV) panels, absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity which can be used to your home. Any excess electricity that isn't immediately used is fed back into the utility grid.

During the solar installation process, PNM will install a bi-directional PV meter to measure how much electricity you use from the grid versus how much excess your solar panels export back. This is called Net Metering and it's what allows you to use the excess energy you produce during peak sunshine for rainy days or high-electricity use days.

Your solar installation company will help you determine the right panels for your home and situation; discuss your options for solar loans; take care of the engineering, planning, and permitting that go into a new solar panel system; and get the system up and running for you. (That is, assuming you choose an excellent solar company!)

Once it's turned on, you get to enjoy the peace of mind knowing your electric bill is no longer at the mercy of rising energy rates and that you're actively reducing your carbon footprint. Win, win!

State and federal solar tax credits can

State and Federal Solar Tax Credit

Right now, in 2024, Santa Fe homeowners can take advantage of both a state and federal tax credit when they make the switch to solar. Between the 10% you could get from the state of New Mexico and the 30% you could get from the federal government, you could save up to 40% on your solar energy system! The incentives for a solar panel installation have never been higher and certainly won't last forever. In short, this is the time to make the switch to a solar power system.

City of Santa Fe and Santa Fe County Permitting

To install solar in Santa Fe, you'll need to obtain permits from the city, the county, the state, and/or your escarpment and HOA. You'll also need permission from PNM.
